Thomas Tuchels tenure at Borussia Dortmund was full of hits and misses.

Thomas Tuchel enjoyed a successful tenure as head coach of Borussia Dortmund. He brought the club back to the top of German football, while also reaching the final of the German Cup and Champions League. However, there were also several lows during his time at the helm, with some poor league results and an acrimonious exit overshadowing his successes. In this article, we will look at both the highs and lows of Tuchel’s time at Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund finished the 2015/16 season in 7th place in the Bundesliga, which led to the sacking of the club’s previous head coach, J├╝rgen Klopp. This led to Tuchel being appointed as Dortmund’s new head coach, and he wasted little time in making his mark on the club.

In his first season in charge, Tuchel led Dortmund to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga, as well as reaching the final of the German Cup. They were also narrowly defeated by Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinal. However, it was in the 2017/18 season that Dortmund really flourished under Tuchel.

They won the German Cup, reached the final of the Champions League, and finished just 2 points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga table. This all culminated in Tuchel being named coach of the Year by Kicker magazine.

While there were also lows during his time at Dortmund, these highs demonstrate just how successful a coach Tuchel was at the Westfalenstadion.

What went wrong at Paris Saint-Germain?

From the outside, it is difficult to know exactly what went wrong at Paris Saint-Germain for Thomas Tuchel.

There were rumors of a power struggle between Tuchel and sporting director Antero Henrique, as well as reports that Neymar was not happy with the German coaching methods.

Whatever the reasons, Tuchel was dismissed by PSG in June 2019, after just one season in charge.

What went wrong with Borussia Dortmund?

Tuchel was sacked by Borussia Dortmund in May 2017, just days after leading the club to the DFB-Pokal final.

Despite reaching the last eight of the Champions League and finishing second in the Bundesliga, Tuchel’s relationship with the Dortmund board had broken down, and he was relieved of his duties.

Tuchel has been out of work since his departure from Dortmund but is now being linked with the vacant Arsenal job.

The 44-year-old is a huge admirer of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and he has spoken extremely highly of the Frenchman in the past.

“I think Arsene Wenger is one of the most outstanding managers in world football,” Tuchel said in February 2017. “I have a lot of respect for him and I think he has done a lot for the club.

“Arsenal are one of the most interesting clubs in Europe from a footballing perspective. They always have very technically gifted players and I enjoy watching their games.”

Tuchel has only ever worked with top-class players during his career, so he’d be the perfect fit for Arsenal. The Gunners need a manager who can get the best out of their talented players, and Tuchel can do that.

He’s also shown that he’s capable of winning trophies, which is something that Arsenal desperately needs. Arsenal fans would certainly love to see Tuchel take over at the club, and it looks like he could be the right man for the job.
